2018 Calendar of Holidays and Events

March Post Meetings

Sunday morning March 18th Posts 135, 474, and 510 will meet at 10AM in Temple Shir Shalom. Department business will begin the combined meeting, then Post Commanders will hold separate Post meetings in the Temple as necessary. This is an important meeting - Poppy sales are starting soon!

National Vietnam War Veterans Day

Thursday, March 29, 2018 is National Vietnam War Veterans Day. Fly your flag proudly.


Friday night March 30th is the 1st Passover Seder. Friday night, April 6th is Yizkor (light candles).

Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah)

Wednesday night, April 11th begins Holocaust Remembrance Day. Events will be announced here as they are identified.

Israel Memorial Day (Yom HaZikaron)

Wednesday night, April 18th begins Memorial Day for the Fallen Soldiers of Israel and Victims of Terrorism

Israel Independence Day (Yom HaAtzmaut)

Wednesday night, April 18th ALSO begins Israel Independence Day.

Headstone Cleaning Day @ Holly (Great Lakes National Cemetery)

April 28th is Headstone Cleaning Day:    

Lag B'Omer

The night of Wednesday, May 2nd begins Lag B'Omer. Communities may celebrate Lag B'Omer by having bonfires for family and friends, while some people may choose to get married on this day. This is because mourning practices that occur during the Omer period are lifted on this date.

Headstone Cleaning @ Machpelah and Hebrew Memorial

Sometime in May we will do Headstone Cleaning at "our" cemeteries - Machpelah and Hebrew Memorial. More info to come (watch this space).

Mother's Day

Sunday, May 13th is Mother's Day. Enjoy quality time with family.

Armed Forces Week / Armed Forces Day

Sunday, May 13th begins Armed Forces week. Armed Forces Day is Saturday, May 19th. This is prime POPPY selling time.


Saturday night, May 19th is Erev Shavuot. Monday, May 21st is Yizkor (light candles).

U.S. Memorial Day Weekend Events

Sunday, May 27th JWV will join other Veteran Service Organizations at the Holly Cemetery.

Monday, May 28th JWV Michigan will hold it's annual services at Machpelah and Hebrew Memorial cemeteries.

Scholarship Applications Close

May 30th is generally the last day that scholarship applications will be accepted. For more information on scholarships, click here.

U.S. Flag Day

Thursday, June 14th, is Flag Day in the USA. If you have any worn-out US Flags and want to dispose of them in a respectful way, we can help you. Each year, JWV-Michigan participates with other Veteran Service Organizations in a state-wide Flag Day disposal event. Please contact us.

U.S. Independence Day

Wednesday, July 4th is Independence Day in the USA. JWV Michigan events will be announced here when they have been confirmed.

Rosh Hashonah

The night of September 9, 2018 begins Rosh Hashonah; September 10th is the first day. Happy New Year to all of our members, friends, and relatives.

Patriot Day

September 11th is Patriot Day. Events will be listed here as they become known to us. JWV members, please wear your JWV hat.

Constitution Day

Monday, September 17th, 2018 is the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution. Events will be listed here as they become known to us. JWV members, please wear your JWV hat.

Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur

The night of September 18th is Kol Nidre - the beginning of Yom Kippur; light Yizkor candles. We hope that all of our friends and relatives have an easy fast. If you intend to build a sukkah, start immediately after Yom Kippur.

Sukkot - September 24th

Kever Avot

Sunday, September 30th, 2018 is our traditional day to visit the gravesites of parents and other loved ones. Many cemeteries that are locked-up all year are opened on this day. Don't expect them to stay unlocked all day; some will re-lock at 1PM.

Shmini Atzeret

The night of October 1st begins Shmini Atzeret, the Eighth Day of Assembly. Light Yizkor candles.

Simchat Torah

The night of October 2nd we celebrate reading the final passage of the Torah, and then roll it back to the beginning.

Veteran's Day Events

On Veteran's Day, the restaurant "McCormick and Schmick's" at 2850 Coolidge Hwy in Troy is offering veterans a free entree - either lunch or dinner. To use this offer, bring proof of honorable discharge. Other freebies and/or discounts for Veteran's Day can be found at:

Events are scheduled by Temples, Synagogues, and Municipalities just prior to Veteran's Day. Those events, dates, times, and locations will be announced through meeting minutes as they become known. Unless the event is scheduled on Shabbat, please wear your JWV hat.

Hannukah - December 3rd

The night of December 3rd, light the first candle on your Menorah. Happy Chanukah to all!

Trip to Battle Creek V.A. Hospital

On December 25th, our annual trip to provide comfort and support to residents of the Battle Creek V.A. hospital leaves via bus from the parking lot of Temple Beth El (14 Mile and Telegraph, Birmingham, Michigan) promptly at 8 A.M. Be there by 7:45 A.M. or risk missing the bus. Please wear your JWV hat. The bus returns between 4 and 4:30 P.M.
